Project Title: Botany and Photography
Project Description: For years, Mr. Reynold's botany classes have collected and identifed plants for a semester-long project. The students learn how to preserve the plants for documentation, perform specimen identification, and study the characteristics of each plant. This year, Mr. Reynolds and photography teacher Karey Walter developed a new component for the project called cyanotypes. Cyanotypes are plant imprints that are developed like photographs. Students use cyanotypes to see each plant's negative space, allowing them to learn the plant as a whole. To learn more about the process, please see artist Karey Walter's blog site. Project Title: Holocaust Project
Project Description: Students read Jennifer Roy's The Yellow Star and reflected on the concept of the "bystander" and the events of the Holocaust in light of their understanding of Lovett's Guiding Principles. Afterwards, each student created a glass installation to symbolize their interpretations. Artist Katy McDougal demonstrated the glass process before the students began creating an image on flat glass. McDougal fired each piece in the kiln and had the students write a word that summarizes their thoughts on the Halocaust with a Sharpie before firing them one last time. Project Title: Retablos: Miracles
Project Description: Thanks to Lovett Spanish teacher Lauren Patterson, Atlanta Artists Nels Guzman and Heather Greenway, Visual Arts teacher Amy Lee Story, and intern Helen Woolard, Lovett's Spanish V/VI class created retablos, small sculptural works of art that relay the stories of religious and/or personal sorrows and triumphs. Guzman and Greenway first gave a bilingual presentation to present the history of retablos as devotional works of art in 16th century Spain to the more contemporary Latin American versions. The artists guided students in examining their overarching artistic message and how best to present it in their own “Retablo” art project. Students then learned how to use different mixed media techniques and materials to express a certain theme or personal story in a meaningful way. Students stretched themselves creatively as they produced artwork that was not only personal, but also connected to their own American cultural experience. By the end of the project, students had gained experience exercising and enhancing their oral and written Spanish skills. Project Title: Pin Hole Camera meets AP Art History
Teachers Sally Crouse and Karey Walter teamed up to create a special photography experience for this year's AP Art History class. This historic process includes using a light proof box with light sensitive paper and a tiny hole. This pin hole acts as an aperture that allows in just enough light to create these amazing images. Sally was able to bring history to present day. The AP Art History class collaborated with Ms. Walters Photo II class who helped assist the history students with developing these images.
